  • Swithenbanks Solar Hot Water Cylinders

Our Solar Hot Water Cylinders are specifically designed to work in conjunction with the domestic heating system. These solar cylinders are manufactured with either two or three independent coils. One or two to transfer heat from an independent heating source, (e.g. central heating boiler or solid fuel). The other, which is manufactured from high efficency finned tube with a high heating surface, to transfer heat from the solar thermal panels. The boiler coil which (if fitted) is manufactured to BS 1566 and can be fitted with 28mm compression connections or 22mm compression connections. The high efficiency solar hot water coil can be fitted with 22mm compression or 15mm compression fittings. We normally fit 22mm compression fittings to the heating coils and 15mm compression fittings to the solar coil. Our solar cylinders are manufactured to our own designs, and we can make up custom cylinders to customer specifications.

We can supply vented and thermal store cylinders. Thermal store cylinders are used to supply mains pressure hot water and this is done by means of a 'thermal coil' - this is a high efficiency coil situated at the top of the tank, which heats mains pressure water as it is required and unlike a more expensive unvented cylinder this does not require an annual inspection.

    Retro-fit solar hot water coil

Retro-fit coils are used when replacing a hot water cylinder is not an option. A retro-fit coil goes in the hot water cylinder's immersion socket and the solar panel is fitted directly to it. Retro-fitting is a very cost-effective option for connecting solar thermal panels.

Retro-fit solar installations (such as SolaPlug, SolaSyphon & your coil) are recognized by MCS if:

    The installer is MCS accredited.
    The collector is MCS approved.
The cylinder is in good condition & fit for purpose, & an additional jacket added if necessary.
The backup heating is timed to come on at the end of the day only.
Clear instructions are left with the home owner regards timing of back up heating. (SolaPlug comes with stickers for solar & boiler controller).
